Points of Light: A Modern Reflection on Nehemiah’s Triumph

IIn the quiet and warmly lit meeting room of the Contoso Road Church of Christ, Jeremiah and Ezekiel, the church’s elders, gathered around an old, sturdy oak table. The atmosphere was filled with a sense of purpose as they prepared to address the congregation.

Jeremiah adjusted his glasses, cleared his throat, and began, “Brothers and sisters, today we reflect on a powerful lesson from the scriptures—Nehemiah’s rebuilding of the Jerusalem walls, completed in just fifty-two days. This historical feat, detailed in Nehemiah 6:15-16, isn’t just a tale of ancient construction but a testament to divine intervention.”

Ezekiel nodded in agreement, his face showing traces of awe. “Indeed, Jeremiah. When all the surrounding enemies and nations saw the completed walls, they lost their confidence. It was clear to them that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.”

Jeremiah continued, “The walls, nearly two miles long, enclosing about 100 acres, stood forty feet high and eight feet thick, adorned with thirty-four watchtowers and eight gates. The speed and scale of this construction were meant to be a sign—a signal that God was with His people.”

“Their enemies saw this and were disheartened,” Ezekiel interjected, his voice steady and reflective. “This wasn’t just a physical victory, but a spiritual triumph. It’s a vivid illustration that when we serve God faithfully, even those who doubt or oppose us can see His power in our lives.”

Jeremiah leaned forward, his hands clasped together on the table. “This brings us to our modern day, where our successes as Christians—be it in personal growth, community service, or ministry outreach—serve a similar purpose. Our church’s online ministry, for example, recently surpassed one million subscribers. This milestone isn’t just a number; it’s a testament to God’s active presence in our mission.”

Ezekiel smiled, his eyes gleaming with enthusiasm. “Just as former President George H. Bush recognized ‘Points of Light’ in individuals bettering their communities through volunteer work, we too are called to be points of light. Each act of kindness, each word of truth we share, contributes to a brighter world, countering the darkness with the light of Christ.”

Jeremiah’s voice filled the room with a comforting yet commanding tone. “We are reminded by Matthew 5:14, ‘You are the light of the world.’ Each of us carries this light—not just to illuminate our paths but to guide others out of darkness.”

Ezekiel concluded, “Our challenge and our charge, dear brothers and sisters, is to embrace this role with the seriousness and joy it deserves. Let us be diligent, let us be faithful, and let us light up the world with the truth and love of God.”

As the meeting drew to a close, the congregation was visibly moved, inspired by the reflections of their elders. The message was clear: like Nehemiah’s walls, their collective efforts in faith were not just for their benefit but a beacon to all—a signal of God’s unfailing strength and guidance.
